Breast Anatomy
The breast is composed of a skin envelope that surrounds glandular tissue and fat. The breast rests on a broad and thick skeletal muscle called the pectoralis. The shape of a particular breast is determined by the quality of the breast skin envelope, the tissue it is filled with, and the relationships of the breast to the surrounding anatomic landmarks, such as the axilla (armpit), sternum (breast bone), clavicle (collar bone) and abdominal wall. It is normal to have some asymmetry between the two breasts. When discussing natural breast asymmetry with our patients, we comment that 'a woman's breasts are sisters, not twins'. Unless specifically corrected for, assymetry in breast appearance will be still present after augmentation surgery.

There is no defined aesthetic 'ideal' for the human breast. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, there are a few basic principles that are common to an aesthetically pleasing breast. The nipple should be positioned above the level of the infra-mammary fold. When the nipple position lies below the infra-mammary fold, the breast exhibits nipple ptosis, and the recommended treatment may include a breast lift (mastopexy) procedure in addition to breast augmentation. This combined procedure is called a mastopexy-augmentation.

A natural appearing breast augmentation should enhance the shape of the breast, adding volume where it is deficient and correct for abnormal breast anatomy, where it is present.
